Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF HELETHORPE IS DOCUMENTED BY NAME FROM 1212 BUT NEVER IN TAXATION RETURNS, AND IN 1563 1 HOUSEHOLD IS STILL ASCRIBED TO IT, THOUGH NOT NECESSARILY ON THE VILLAGE SITE. EARTHWORKS WERE RECORDED ON EARLY AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHS SUBSEQUENTLY DESTROYED EXCEPT FOR A PART OF THEIR BOUNDARY. IN PLAN THEY FORMED A RECTANGULAR BLOCK, THAT MIGHT EITHER BE A SINGLE LARGE DESMESNE FARM OR A SMALL SETTLEMENT PERHAPS WITH A CENTRAL STREET AND TWO ROWS OF PROPERTIES; THE DITCHED AND EMBANKED FORM OF THE WHOLE MAY ARGUE FOR THE FORMER. THE SITE APPEARS INSERTED INTO AN ARABLE FIELD SYSTEM AT THE JUNCTION OF SEVERAL FURLONGS. FIELDWALKING IN 1977 PRODUCED POTTERY OF TWELFTH - EARLY FIFTEENTH CENTURY DATE BUT NO LATER. IN ONE AREA WAS A VERY LARGE AND DENSE SCATTER OF TILE OF SHELLY FABRIC THAT MAY INDICATE MANUFACTURE ON THE SITE. {1}{2}{3}{4}
