Full Description

THE THREE HOLDINGS REPORTED IN SWINTHORPE IN 1086 HAD BEEN REDUCED TO TWO BY 1115. IN THE MID TWELFTH CENTURY SUBSTANTIAL GRANTS WERE MADE TO KIRKSTEAD ABBEY BY TENANTS OF BOTH ESTATES. A GRANGE WAS CERTAINLY CREATED HERE BY THE LATE TWELFTH CENTURY. BARLINGS ABBEY ALSO HELD A MESSUAGE AT SNELLAND AT THE DISSOLUTION AND A HOUSE AND GARDENS IN SWINTHORPE. SINCE SWINTHORPE WAS SO RARELY RECORDED SEPARATELY FROM SNELLAND NO POPULATION TRENDS ARE RECOVERABLE, EXCEPT THAT THERE WAS A MINIMUM POPULATION OF THREE IN 1086. SLIGHTLY LESS THAN HALF THE EARTHWORKS NOW REMAIN. THEY SUGGEST EITHER THE EXPANSION OF AN EARLY NUCLEUS OVER FORMER ARABLE OR THE NEW CREATION OF A SETTLEMENT WITHIN A NETWORK OF ARABLE FURLONGS, IN EITHER CASE INVOLVING ONE OR TWO MONASTIC FARMS. THE PRESENT FARM IS CALLED GRANGE FARM. {1}{2}{3}{4}, HTM 21M
