Full Description

A windmill once stood here, on land to the south of Scothern. The mill was working up to c.1910, when it was replaced by an oil driven engine mill in the village. The house opposite probably belonged to the miller. The mound upon which the mill stood remains. {1}{2} Brick foundations of the mill are exposed on the site, and half a former millstone is visible. The name of the field in which the mill stood is recorded as 'Millhole Leys' in 1728 and a windmill was recorded in 1629. Whether this was the windmill with cottage and garden listed among the appurtenances of Barlings Abbey's Manor at the Dissolution is unclear. The mound may therefore possibly be of medieval date. An earthwork survey of the mound was made in 1982, and the remains are discernible on aerial photography of this area. {3}{4}{5}
