Full Description

The Church of St Germain has a Perpendicular tower, possibly dating from 1590, an Early English nave arcade and a 12th century chancel arch. In the north aisle is a floriated tomb slab, formerly in the chancel. The nave and chancel were restored in 1796, 1840, 1861 and 1904. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4} A hoard of silver coins was recorded as being found within the church, at around the turn of the 19th century. The finding was recorded in Cragg's, 'History of Lincolnshire' (published c.1820), where p.143 states: 'A few years ago two quarts of silver coins were found in the wall of the north aisle of the church'. Rev Allison notes in his c.1911 article, 'Scotherne - A Paper on the History of the Village', that the coins had been held inside a red morocco slipper that had been placed in a niche in the wall. The date of reporting would suggest that the hoard was found during the 1796 restoration works, suggesting it had been deposited in the 17th or 18th century. {5} Evidence of some of the various phases of restoration and extension works conducted within the church was identified in March 2000, during archaeological monitoring of internal alterations to the north transept. The previously suspected sequence of alterations to this part of the church was confirmed, with the north aisle rebuild and construction of the north transept clearly identified as being two separate events. The restoration works seem to have begun shortly after a Faculty was granted in 1796, with the rebuilding of the north aisle in brick. This wall appears to have been demolished and partially rebuilt in stone, however, when the north transept was added in 1840. {6}{7}
