Full Description

From the 17th century onwards there were some unexplained population fluctuations in the settlement of Sudbrooke. In 1662, 11 persons paid the Hearth Tax on a total of 17 hearths. By the early 18th century there was a decline from 16 to 11 but this had recovered by 1901. Fieldwalking in 1981 produced post-medieval pottery, and some possible structural remains survive. {1}{2} The majority of Sudbrooke was monastic land, which was acquired by the Grantham family after the Dissolution. The land was sold to Christopher Beresford in 1629, who is said to have moved his family into a sizeable property near the village, named as 'Sudbrooke Holme', although the exact location of this house is unknown. It may have been in the same location as the late 18th century country house, built by Richard Ellison, and demolished in c.1930 (see PRN 56489). The estate of Sudbrooke Holme was acquired by the Ellisons in 1759 and turned by them, and latterly the Sibthorpes, into an emparked grand residence (see PRN 53073). {3}
