Full Description

This is possibly the original site of Barlings Abbey, a medieval monastic grange and then a post-medieval house. The earthworks now survive in a small triangle of pasture and their former extent can only be ascertained by details recorded on early OS plans and aerial photographs. The earthworks are believed to represent a complete network of old flood banks and drainage ditches. {1}2}{3}{4}{5}{6} A geophysical survey carried out in January 2009 located a broad, linear anomaly interpreted as a possible fishpond or canal associated with Barlings Abbey. The anomaly lies to the northwest of the main earthwork complex, on a similar northwest to southeast alignment to some of the latter's more prominent linear components. The survey also located probable furrows, which appear to form part of the surrounding field system. The furrows, also situated to the northwest of the main complex (NGR TF07615/74535), lie on identical alignments to ridge and furrow visible on aerial photographs and would appear to represent the further, north-eastward, extent of the same remains. {7}{8}
