Full Description

The site of the monastic grange known as Barleymouth lies at Short Ferry in the angle of the confluence of the River Witham and the Barlings Eau or Langworth River. Barleymouth was a grange of Stainfield Priory. Its location gave it access to specialised riverside resources (including fisheries; see PRN 51212) that could be passed to the mother house. Excavations at Short Ferry have recovered evidence of possible grange buildings, of fishing and fish-processing and much medieval pottery, including stamped curfew sherds. Finds also include net sinkers and fish smokers. The site has a mound which is a distinctive feature of the Witham fisheries, as are the 'fishgarths', which are small enclosures for drying nets. Other activities on the site would have included the drying and barreling of fish. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9} It is suggested that there is a relationship between this grange and the nearby conjectured causeway. This causeway may possibly date as far back as the Bronze Age (see PRN 54780). {10}
