Full Description

Several sherds of Romano-British pottery, including a single sherd of worn samian ware, were found in this location following ploughing of this field in 1964. {1} A quantity of Roman pottery was recovered from this location, during excavations of a medieval moated site in excavated in 1966-7. The assemblage was largely comprised of rim sherds from grey ware vessels, but also included cream and shelly wares. Several fragments of Roman roof tile were also recovered. {2} Further sherds of Roman grey ware pottery were found in this location during field survey in 1977. {3} Further fragments of Roman tile were found during field walking on the site in 2001. Holes for pegging the tiles could be seen in most of the fragments recovered. {4}
