Full Description

IN 1957 HULL MUSEUM ACQUIRED TWO BRONZE MOUNTS WITH ENAMEL INLAY FOUND IN MARKET RASEN. THE MOUNTS ARE FROM AN ANGLO-SAXON HANGING-BOWL. NO FURTHER INFORMATION REGARDING A FIND SPOT. {1}{2} A SMALL CIRCULAR ESCUTHEON, DIAMETER 2.9 CM, AND AN AXE-SHAPED FRAGMENT, SIMILARLY DECORATED: THE AXE-BLADE FRAGMENT SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN CUT DOWN FROM A LARGER PIECE OF BRONZE. THE DESIGNS, IN A COARSE LINEAR STYLE ARE RESERVED AGAINST A RED ENALMEL GROUND. THAT ON THE ESCUTCHEON IS IN THE FORM OF AN EQUAL ARMED CROSS WITH CRUDELY PELTA- OR MUSHROOM-SHAPED ENDS. THE PIECES CAME FROM A ROAD-SIDE TRENCH IN 1958: NO OTHER FINDS WERE RECORDED. ITS AFFINITIES ARE WITH THE LULLINGSTONE BOWL AND SHIELD MOUNTS FROM CAENBY AND A DATE AROUND THE MIDDLE OF THE SEVENTH CENTURY IS SUGGESTED. {4}
