Full Description
INSCRIBED STONE OF PRE-NORMAN DATE FOUND AT CASTLE HILL IN 1770. NOW LOST, BUT AN ILLUSTRATION WAS MADE IN 1774. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The titulus may record a victory of Egbert of Wessex over Wiglaf of Mercia in 827, or may be a dedication tablet from a church. There is further evidence that there was a church or monastery at Caistor, 50m north of St Peter's Church, and dedicated to St Mary. The style indicates that is of 8th or early 9th century date. {6}
