Full Description

A Bronze Age urn was found in 1977, during construction work on the site of a new housing estate off Navigation Lane. The vessel was only seen when it fell out of the bucket of the mechanical excavator, although the finder said that there were other pots, ash and knobs of red burnt clay found at the same time. The urn measured 114mm high, and had a maximum diameter of 120mm. The collar was decorated with a simple chevron pattern produced by a twisted cord, while a stabbed pattern was used both below the collar and on the rim. The vessel was thought to have possibly contained a cremation, and may indicate the presence of an urn cemetery in the vicinity. {1}
