POSSIBLE PREHISTORIC CROPMARK ROUND BARROW. ALSO VISIBLE ON RAF VAPS. {1}{2}
A ditch was sectioned during work on the British Gas pipeline. The ditch was apparently linear, running approximately NW-SE but with differing sections. It had been cut into an extremely friable chalk subsoil and consequently the edges were difficult to define. The ENE facing section was shallow with a flattened base, the WSW facing section, shallow with a very rounded base. It measured 0.82m deep and 3.35m wide. The uppermost layer of tertiary fill contained bone fragments, which did not survive extraction and one pottery fragment, dated to the late Iron Age. It is possible that the pottery fragment had been redeposited in the edge of the feature at some time.. Two of the earlier rubble fills also contained bone fragments which were identified as belonging to cattle.
On a printout received from the RCHAME at York showing possible cropmarks close to the pipe route is a circular cropmark. The angle at which the ditch crossed the pipetrench is consistent with it being that section of the cropmark closest to its position. It would appear likely, therefore, that this feature is either part of the cropmark or a feature concentric with it. No other feature was noted in close proximity which could have represented the return of the circular ditch across the pipetrench. It is possible that the ditch of the cropmark was segmented and the pipetrench runs through a gap. It is not considered likely that similar features within a short distance would not have been recognised.{3}
