Full Description

ORIGINALLY SEPARATELY ASSESSED IN THE SUBSIDY ROLL, BY 1316 THE VILLAGE OF HUNDON HAD ALREADY BEEN LINKED WITH AUDLEBY. {1}{2} A SETTLEMENT IS DOCUMENTED FROM 1086 ONWARDS BUT IS SO RARELY SEPARATED FROM ITS NEIGHBOURS THAT NO CLEAR ASSESSMENT IS POSSIBLE. THERE WAS 1 TAXPAYER IN 1524. THIS SUPPORTS LOCAL INFORMATION THAT AN OLD AND DILAPIATED TUDOR MANOR HOUSE WAS PULLED DOWN C1745 AND REPLACED WITH THE PRESENT FARMHOUSE IN SUGGESTING THAT THE VILLAGE HAD GONE BY THE EARLY C16 AND THE SITE WAS THEREAFTER OCCUPIED BY A SINGLE SUBSTANTIAL RESIDENCE, AS AT BOTH AUDLEBY AND FONABY. SURVIVING EARTHWORKS SOUTH OF THE FARM ARE PROBABLY NOT MEDIEVAL VILLAGE REMAINS. {6}
