Full Description

TWO KILNS WERE EXCAVATED IN 1983, AND IDENTIFIED A HITHERTO UNKNOWN PRODUCTION SITE WHICH HAD BEEN DUG INTO THE SUBSOIL OF WINDBLOWN SAND AND LINED WITH CLAY. KILN 1 HAD A SUB-RECTANGULAR, ALMOST D-SHAPED OVEN, WITH A SHORT FLUE OPPOSITE THE STRAIGHT SIDE. ALTHOUGH POTTERY WAS FOUND IN THE KILN NO KILN FURNITURE SURVIVED; IT MAY HAVE BEEN REMOVED FOR USE IN KILN 2. THE WALLS OF THE OVEN WERE THINLY LINED WITH CLAY, AND PART OF ONE WALL HAD PARTIALLY COLLAPSED, AND MAY HAVE BEEN THE REASON FOR THE ABANDONMENT OF THE KILN. THE STOKEHOLE OF KILN 2 CUT THROUGH THE FILLED-IN STOKEHOLE OF ITS PREDECESSOR. IT IS NOT KNOWN HOW MUCH TIME ELAPSED BETWEEN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE TWO KILNS BUT IT MAY HAVE BEEN A MATTER OF DAYS OR WEEKS RATHER THAN MONTHS OR YEARS. THE SECOND KILN WAS SIMILAR TO THE FIRST, WITH A SUB- CIRCULAR OVEN WITH CLAY-LINED FLOORS BUT THE FLOOR WAS NOT LINED. {1}
