Full Description

The settlement of Newton has no marked demographic fluctuations documented. Morphologically it has an extremely regular and planned appearance, based on a ruler-straight north-south street with the church at the north end. On the east side, long narrow properties run back to a dyke. A superficially similar pattern on the west may in fact be a later development, the rear fields integrate poorly with the street-frontage properties and appear to have lain outside the old enclosure. This would entail an asymmetrical arrangement similar to nearby Laughterton and presumably implying a staged development via a single-sided layout. {1}{2}
