Full Description
THE SITE OF THE CHURCH OF ST MARY MAGDELEN. IT WENT INTO DECAY AFTER THE REFORMATION, AND A WAR MEMORIAL STANDS THERE NOW, AND PART OF THE INSCRIPTION READS 'AFTER 1568 THE VICARAGE WAS UNITED WITH THE RECTORY OF AISTHORPE'. IN 1964, WITHIN THE ENCLOSURE WERE SEVERAL SMALL ARCHITECTURAL REMAINS OF THE CHURCH. GRASSED OVER BUILDING FOUNDAATIONS WERE CLEARLY VISIBLE, AS WAS THE CHURCHYARD BOUNDARY. THE CORNERS OF THE LATTER WERE ALSO MARKED BY LARGE STONES, PRESUMABLY TO PREVENT ACCIDENTAL AGRICULTURAL DISTURBANCE. IT WAS DEMOLISHED IN THE EARLY C17. {1}{2}
The site of the church has been included in the scheduling 22761 for Thorpe medieval settlement. The first documentary evidence for the church is in the mid-twelfth century. The buried remains of the church and churchyard are located within a raised rectangular enclosure measuring about 50m by 30m. For more details see the scheduling document 22761.{3}
