Full Description
Possible Neolithic long barrow or mortuary enclosure, identified as cropmarks on aerial photographs. {1}{2}
This long barrow is situated on the Waithe Beck valley slope, facing west, and sited between two dry valleys. It is aligned east to west, and the long axis traverses the contours. It is an oval to trapezoidal enclosure with convex terminals, the west end being more pointed. It is approximately 44m in length and 19m in width. {3}{4}
The barrow has been scheduled. It is thought that since the ditch circuit is complete, and not broken by a causeway, that this long barrow never had a significant earthwork mound, and was one of the simpler types of Lincolnshire long barrow. {5}
An amendment to the scheduling was made in November 2022, to more accurately draw the protected area around the surviving remains. The long barrow appears on more recent aerial photography as cropmarks and soilmarks showing a roughly oval ditched enclosure. The barrow also appears as a shallow earthwork on lidar data, with maximum dimensions measuring 44m east to west by 22m north to south. Its western terminal is somewhat pointed whilst the eastern end is slightly convex. There is possibly a short length of an outer second ditch on the east side. The barrow lies some 400m west of Waithe Beck, on the east-facing slope of the Waithe Beck valley. Since the ditch is not broken by a causeway, it is thought that this is an example of the simpler form of Lincolnshire Wolds long barrow which was not elaborated by the construction of a substantial earthwork mound over the area set aside for funerary activities. {6}
