Full Description

Cropmarks of a probable Neolithic long barrow have been noted on aerial photographs taken of this area to the south of Stainton le Vale. The barrow is situated in a slope position on a spur, towards the head of the valley of the Waithe Beck. It is aligned north-north-west by south-south-east, with its long axis running parallel to the contours. It is an enclosure of oblong form with convex ends, measuring roughly 44m by 16m, and with the side ditches showing as slightly wider marks. {1}{2}{3}{4} The barrow shows on more recent aerial photographs as described above, elongated along a north-north-west by south-south-east axis, and with maximum dimensions measuring 21m by 47m. A small abutting ditch is also visible on the north terminal end, though this was thought likely to be a recent agricultural mark. {5}
