Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
Cropmarks of a possible Neolithic long barrow, to the south-west of Riby Grove Farm. Visible as a ditched enclosure measuring approximately 60m by 25m. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
This long barrow is located on a spur, facing north-east at the head of a dry valley, on the east escarpment of the Wolds. It is aligned south-east to north-west and its long axis runs parallel to the contours. {6}{7}
The Neolithic long barrow, 650m south-south-west of Riby Grove Farm is scheduled with the adjacent Bronze Age bowl barrow. The proximity of the two different forms of barrow suggests that the location had an enduring ritual significance, and has considerable significance for the study of settlement and demography in the prehistoric period. {8}
An amendment to the scheduling was made in July 2021, to more accurately draw the protected area around the surviving remains. The long barrow appears on more recent aerial photography as clearly defined cropmarks and soilmarks, and as a very slight earthwork. It measures 65m by 28m, defined by a complete circuit of ditch approximately 2m in width. The south-eastern end directly faces the river valley of Irby Dales. The circuit of the ditch is not thought to be broken by a causeway suggesting that the barrow is an example of the simpler form of Lincolnshire long barrow which was not elaborated by the construction of a large earthen mound when the funerary rituals were completed. {9}
