Full Description
The settlement of Nettleham has a very large rectangular or irregular green to the north-east of the church, now two thirds or more infilled by development, most of which was present by 1777, with roads exiting from corners. It is possible that this green is a secondary development, intruded into or placed alongside a regular two-row street plan of which North Street and Crescent Close form the surviving west and east terminals. {1}
Three empty crofts with no obvious signs of house plans within them, were identified on aerial photographs. {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
A scheme of works was undertaken by Allen Archaeological Associates during groundworks for a residential development in June 2010 to March 2011 [52405a]. Artefacts including pottery, ceramic building material, clay pipe and animal bone dating from the 13th to 20th centuries were found across the site. Stone walls, probably dating from the 17th to 18th century were found in Plots 7 to 9 and 11 to 14. These walls probably relate to Poplar Farm. Two post medieval to early modern pits were also found in Plots 4 and 5. {7}{8}
