Summary

POSSIBLE ROMAN CULVERT DISCOVERED AT RISEHOLME COLLEGE

Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

Full Description

IN 1969, DURING THE BUILDING OF THE MAIN BLOCK AT RISEHOLME COLLEGE, A STONE CULVERT WAS DISCOVERED. IT WAS NOT INVESTIGATED ARCHAEOLOGICALLY BUT WAS COVERED UP AGAIN, AFTER ITS COURSE AHD BEEN DIVERTED. THERE IS A STRONG POSSIBILITY THAT THE CULVERT IS FED BY A NEARBY SPRING. THERE IS NO STRONG EVIDENCE FOR OR AGAINST THE CULVERT BEING ROMAN OR CONNECTED IN SOME WAY WITH THE ROARING MEG AQUEDUCT. IF IT IS ROMAN THEN ITS CONSTRUCTION - SAID TO BE OF STONE - IS NOT REMINISCENT OF THE AQUEDUCT. {1}
