Full Description

In 1607 to 1608, Sir Thomas Monson's principal residence was at Burton, where he had 'orchards, gardines and scyte of the hall or mannor house' extending to over 6 acres. Garden features include a "ha ha". This house must have been recently created, perhaps on an earlier manorial site. {1}{2}{3} Burton Hall is a Grade II* Listed country house, built in 1768 by James Paine for Lord Monson. Alterations and addition to the house date from the 20th century. {4}{5}{6} An adjoining building functioning as a garage/storage area and section of wall was subject to a building recording in 2023, as it was considered the wall was included in the curtilage of the listing. The wall surveyed reused part of the original hall building, as well as containing historic and 20th century material in several phases. The garage itself was altered in the 19th century, however the cellars below are believed to be of contemporary date with the construction of the hall. {7}{8}
