Full Description

The Church of St John the Baptist retains Norman, Early English and decorated arcades which have been walled up in the 18th century. The church was largely rebuilt in 1859. {1}{2} A parish church built in the 12th century which underwent alterations in the 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th centuries and was remodelled and restored in 1859 by Teulon. Many monuments to members of the Monson family are within including effigies of Sir John and and Lady Monson, designed by Nicholas Stone in 1625, set recumbent under a six poster canopy. The church also includes the Monson mausoleum, built by William Watkins. It was designed in a Perpendicular Gothic Revival style, and is located at the north-east end of the north aisle, but with access only from the churchyard. {6}
