Full Description

THE GRANGE WAS THE POSSESSION OF THE PREMONSTRATENSIAN ABBEY OF BARLINGS. THE MANOR OR GRANGE REMAINED IN THE HANDS OF THE ABBEY UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION. A DISTINCT GROUP OF EARTHWORKS, CLEARLY NOT VILLAGE REMAINS AND NOT IN ORIGIN PART OF THE POST MEDIEVAL GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT, LIES EAST OF THE NORTH- SOUTH FARM ROAD THAT LEADS TO SOUTH CARLTON. THEY ARE BOUNDED ON THE EAST BY A SURVIVING HEDGELINE, AND ON THE SOUTH EITHER BY THE STREAM OR MORE PROBABLY A BOUNDARY JUST SOUTH OF IT THAT CONTINUES THE HEDGE LINE. THE LATTER FORMED THE BOUNDARY OF THE RECTORY LANDS OF MIDDLE CARLTON LYING TO THE EAST AND SOUTH. THE REMAINS CONSIST OF LARGE CLOSES OR DITCHED PADDOCKS OVERLYING EARLIER ARABLE: ONLY IN THE SOUTH WEST AND SOUTH EAST ARE THERE SIGNS OF OCCUPATION THAT HAS LEVELLED OR LOWERED THE ARABLE TRACES. THIS IS SIMILAR TO MONASTIC PROPERTIES, ESPECIALLY GRANGES, IDENTIFIED ELSEWHERE IN THIS STUDY, AND MAY REPRESENT THE DESMESNE FARM OF BARLINGS ABBEY. {1}{2}{3}, HTM 17 M
