Full Description

THE DEVELOPMENT OF NORTH CARLTON IS NOT EASY TO EXPLAIN, BUT THERE APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN A PLANNED TWO ROW EXTENSION TO A PRE-EXISTING SETTLEMENT. CLEARANCE OF PROPERTIES IN THE EARLY C17, PERHAPS FOR GARDENS, WAS CONTINUED BY C18 EMPARKING WHICH ALSO INVOLVED THE REORIENTATION OF THE VILLAGE. BY 1303 THE PRINCIPAL MANOR HAD BEEN GRANTED TO BARLINGS ABBEY. IT REMAINED IN THE HANDS OF BARLINGS UNTIL THE DISSOLUTION. {1} AT SK948775 STONE FOUNDATIONS OF ABOUT SIX RECTANGULAR DWELLINGS EXPOSED IN AREA OF CARLTON; ALSO ROOF TILES, ANIMAL BONES AND SCANT POTTERY. {2}, HTM 17-30 M
