Type and Period (1)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF RYLAND IS DOCUMENTED THROUGHOUT THE MEDIEVAL PERIOD FROM C12 ONWARDS, BUT ONLY DISTINGUISHED IN TAXATION RETURNS OR POPULATION INDICATORS AS A SETTLEMENT OF 23 HOUSEHOLDS IN 1841. IT HAD A MEDIEVAL CHAPEL WHOSE OFFERINGS BELONGED TO WELTON, WHOSE PRECISE LOCATION IS NOT KNOWN. THE SETTLEMENT HAS NOW BEEN ASSIMILATED INTO WELTON AND IS COMPLETELY BUILT UP: BUT IN PLAN FORM IT IS A SINGLE EW STREET WITH A REGULAR TWO ROW LAYOUT THAT SUGGESTS A PLANNED ORIGIN. {1}
