Full Description

The remains of gypsum quarrying take the form of hills and holes (i.e. delves and spoil heaps, similar to limestone working) occupying at least 12ha on the keuper marl escarpment north-east of the town and extending into Thonock. The name Pitt Hills is documented at least from the beginning of the 17th century and their extent was mapped in about 1690. A mine for gypsum was a manorial appurtenance in 1296. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
