Full Description
LATE ROMAN, 'EARLY GERMANIC' ROMAN BELT BUCKLE. {1} TYPE IIA, BUT AN UNUSUAL VARIANT. THE LOOP IS DECORATED WITH TWO CONFRONTED DOLPHINS, WHICH ARE CRUDELY EXECUTED, THEIR CRESTS BEING SUGGESTED BY STEPS ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE LOOP, AND THEIR EYES BY DEEP HOLLOWS. THIS EXAMPLE DIFFERS FROM OTHER TYPE I BUCKLES IN THAT IT HAS TWO RINGS ON ITS HINGE BAR FOR ATTACHING IT TO A BUCKLE PLATE. NOTHING IS KNOWN OF THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE BUCKLE'S DISCOVERY. {2}
