Full Description
An Anglo-Saxon cremation cemetery discovered whilst digging gravel in 1828. Over twenty urns of various forms containing cremations, were found at irregular intervals in a line along the length of a 'tumulus…thrown up in a rectangular form and covering little more than a rood [a quarter of an acre]' which itself was on a gravel knoll, (described as 'large tumulus 3 to 4 acres in extent'). The findspot not located with any certainty; gravel ridge with former pits is at TF 22639675, TF 22599671, TF 2260 9674 (the largest pit). {1}{4}
The gravel pit is just out of the County of Humberside [now North-East Lincolnshire Council, 2000] in Swinhope civil parish but the cemetery may extend beyond the county boundary into Newton parish. {2}
A cremation cemetery, with a primary burial in a barrow. Phillips considers this to be an Anglo-Saxon cemetery but the grid reference, TF 242 936, is in Binbrook parish, and is possibly an error. {3}{5}
