Full Description
Probable farmstead, comprising a main enclosure flanked on north and west by ditched track, and associated with fragmentary enclosures to the north and east. A broad double ditched linear feature also extends across the ridge summit to the north east. {1}{2}{3}
Fieldwalking published in 1988 produced a quantity of Roman pottery from the area of the main enclosure on the north side of the road. The pottery was very abraded and included greywares, oxidised red wares and calcite gritted wares. {5}
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken in 2009 for a linear pipeline route running along the north side of Walesby Hill road cutting directly through the area of the cropmark. Ditches of varying nature, and several small pits were recorded containing material dated to between the 1st and 2nd century, seemingly predating the villa site to the south (MLI50571). The mix of coarse and fine pottery wares, in conjunction with a quernstone, ceramic building material, animal bone, and a copper alloy brooch is seemingly indicative of a relatively high status farmstead. Several pottery sherds showed evidence for being trimmed and reused. {6}{7}
Satelite imagery provided by Google Earth suggests further archaeological remains relating to the settlement survive to at least the west of the area denoted by the NMP cropmarks. {8}
