Full Description

A concentration of Roman pottery was found in this location at Risby Moor. The pottery included firebars and kiln debris, and pieces of grey and gritty ware, and was recovered from a group of 5 or 6 patches of darker soil. The pottery included pieces from grey storage jars of local type, large bowls with everted rims, lipped bowls copying black-burnished ware types, and cooking pots with looped handles. The pottery and soil marks were thought to indicate the site of a former Roman pottery kiln (or kilns) in this vicinity, and may form part of a much larger group of possible kilns located along the western edge of the Wolds. May have a possible connection with the Roman villa at Walesby Top that is just over 2km away (see MLI50571). {1}{2}{3}
