Full Description

PRN 51810 Possible unknown prehistoric cropmark enclosures and linear features were seen on aerial photographs. {1} Archaeological evaluation of this area revealed a number of ditchs of 1st and 2nd century AD date which correspond closely to the cropmark features plotted from aerial photographs. These features suggest a small Romano-British agricultural settlement of a type common in the Wolds. Two earlier ditches and a pit of late Iron Age to early Roman date were also seen. A quantity of late Iron Age and Romano-British pottery and animal bone were recovered. Environmental sampling indicates that the site lay in open short-turfed grassland or pasture during the late Iron Age and early Roman period. Evidence for cereal processing in the 2nd century AD may indicate a change in local agricultural practice. {2}{3}
