Full Description

Cropmarks of a possible prehistoric or Roman boundary, to the north of How Hill, Swinhope. Visible as a single linear feature, defined by a single roughyl east to west aligned ditch, running for approximately 50m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2} This feature has also been interpreted as a possible Neolithic long barrow. It is situated on the north-west facing upper valley slope of the Waithe Beck. It is aligned roughly east to west, with it's long axis traversing the contours. It takes the form of trapeziform enclosure with possible angular corners, measuring roughly 92m by 30m (tapering to 20m). It has been identified as soilmarks, though it is unclear whether the full extent is visible. The single terminal that could be noted is straight. It follows a parallel alignment to the more probable long barrow approximately 60m to the south-west (see MLI54203). {3}{4} More recent analysis of the aerial photography for this area has cast doubt on its interpretation as a prehistoric feature or long barrow. The feature can be seen on the photography as moderately clear soilmarks, running for nearly 120m along an east to west alignment. The feature is thought to be a former boundary ditch, of almost certain medieval or post-medieval date. The ditch is staggered, and shows no evidence of a return. Slight earthworks of former ridge and furrow in this area seem to respect the ditch, suggesting it formed part of the former field system in this area. {5}{6}
