Site of the deserted medieval village of Swinhope. The remains are now levelled (1970). {1} The village of Swinhope suffered a decline in the medieval period which is well evidenced by documents, earthworks and material finds. This decline was already far advanced by the early 14th century. It was exacerbated by the Black Death. In 1428 there were fewer than 10 households and only 6 in 1563. {2} Remains of the medieval village have been identified as earthworks and cropmarks on aerial photographs examined part of the National Mapping Programme. Features identitifed included the remains of platforms, lynchets, crofts, tofts, boundaries and enclosures. {3}
