Full Description

IT FIRST APPEARS IN 11TH TO 12TH CENTURY DOCUMENTATION AS A SETTLEMENT WITH A MULTIPLICITY OF TENURE, WITH FIVE OR SIX HOLDINGS RECORDED IN 1086 AND 1115, BUT PERHAPS OF NO GREAT SIZE. THERE WAS A POSSIBLE DROP IN POPULATION IN THE 14TH CENTURY. WELLOW ABBEY HELD ONE OF ITS LARGEST TEMPORAL HOLDINGS IN THORGANBY, AS WELL AS THE PARISH CHURCH. THE POPOULATION WAS HALVED IN THE MID TO LATE 17TH CENTURY AND THE FORMERLY VERY EXTENSIVE AND WELL-PRESERVED EARTHWORKS WERE DESTROYED BEFORE 1966.
