Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
Cropmarks of a probable Neolithic long barrow, to the north of Thoresway Grange Farm. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3}
This long barrow occupies a slope position at the head of a dry valley, facing south-east. It is aligned south-south-east to north-north-west, and the long axis traverses the contours. It is a trapezoidal enclosure with convex terminals, measuring approximately 45m long by 17m wide. The side ditches show up as a wider mark, and in stereovision analysis of aerial photographs, the south end appears raised. {4}{5}
The monument is scheduled as a Neolithic long barrow. {6}
An amendment to the scheduling was made in October 2021, to more accurately draw the protected area around the surviving remains. The long barrow is visible on aerial imagery as a clearly defined shallow earthwork and soilmarks, lying approximately 700m north-north-east of Thoresway Grange Farm. The barrow is on a south facing slope, toward the head of an east-west aligned dry valley. It sits slightly lower than the crest of the hill, and is aligned on a south-east to north-west axis. It measures approximately 41.3m by 16.5m, and is surrounded by a curvilinear ditch. The long sides of the ditch are slightly thickened and the circuit is complete. The absence of a causeway suggests that this may be an example of the simpler form of Lincolnshire Wolds long barrow. The north-west end of the feature is masked by a hedge line. {7}{8}
