Full Description
PRN 51502
A potentially prehistoric enclosure as identified as a cropmark. {1}{2}
Sections of these cropmarks were examined during a watching brief in 1991. The cropmarks comprise of a large many sided enclosure, measuring 80 metres by 60 to 70 metres, with an entrance on the east of c. eight metres, with much of the west side of the ditch under the road. There is also a circular/sub-circular feature which is eight metres in diameter, and a linear feature extending from it. No internal features were found. One section was excavated and contained pieces of cut timber in the primary fill.
Secondary fills suggested a previously existing bank. Several sherds of a very friable, fairly crude, brown shell gritted pottery dating from the 1st century BC and two sherds of Romano British pottery were also found. The extensive environmental evidence found suggests open ground, so a possible function could be a livestock enclosure. {3}
