Full Description

PRN 51497 Possible Roman cropmark enclosures and pits located at TF 01268191, TF 01268194 and TF 01268190. {1} Three sides of a ditched enclosure with subdivisions into three unequal parts. {2} During a watching brief, between January and March 1991, stretches of four ditches of the enclosure were examined. Ditches One and Two were found to contain Roman greyware pottery, and ditch One also contained shelly wares, Samian, amphora and tile. Three internal features were examined. The first (1009) was 2.7 metres in diameter and 0.7 metre deep, and contained greyware and amphora pottery and animal bone, and was possibly a rubbish pit. The second (1007) contained a child skeleton and iron nails. The third (1003) contained one sherd of greyware pottery. The topsoil also contained animal bone, greyware, shelly wares and Samian pottery, probably domestic refuse. It is unclear whether there were dwellings within the enclosure, or if there was an associated settlement or farmstead elsewhere. {3}
