Full Description

Two medieval churches are documented in Spridlington, with dedications to St Hilary and St Albinus, presumably with one belonging to each of the two distinct and contiguous medieval settlements. St Hilary was associated with the northern manor and St Albinus with the southern one (see PRN 51459). The parishes were united in 1417 and licence was given to demolish the ruinous remains of St Albinus. Despite at least two rebuildings in the 19th century, the Church of St Hilary apparently retains its original site. {1} The current Church of St Hilary dates to 1875, when James Fowler was commissioned to rebuild the structure, to commemorate an incumbent who had died in 1873. It was paid for by the widow and friends of the former incumbant. The church has an ornate north-west tower with a saddleback roof. The nave and chancel are wide and spacious and the detail is late 13th century in date, suggesting some material from the earlier church was re-used, or that the new design was based on the earlier style. It has a good interior and fittings and the chancel roof is painted and panelled. There is a cancellum screen between the nave and chancel. The altar, according to the 'builder' of 1875, was decorated by Heaton, Butler and Bayne.
