Full Description
There is speculation that what is now Cliff Road may be on the line of a possible former Roman road. Phillips believed 'there is a possible road to be seen in the alignment of parish boundaries, green track and modern road that starts from Ermine Street in the parish of Spridlington and extends through Toft Newton to Linwood Warren, south-east of Market Rasen.' A continuation of this route stretching right across the Wolds to Grainthorpe on the coast was further speculated. Phillips thought there was 'nothing particularly remarkable about this particular section, but it is wide, seems to have a causeway, and has deep grass margins.' {1}{2}
Cliff Road possibly dates from the post-medieval enclosure of the Spridlington in 1774-6. A strech of probable Roman road or trackway does show as a parch or soilmark on aerial photographs, taken of the area approximately 150m to the south of Rose Cottage (see MLI50578). Cliff Road was just one of the possible Wolds routes suggested by Phillips, although a further continuation of this road may exist close to Market Rasen (see MLI52012). {3}
