Full Description

A complete hanging bowl of diameter 220mm, found in 1989 by a metal detectorist on a known Roman site (see MLI51449) and now in City and County Museum. The bowl originally had four decorated hook-escutcheons, only one of which survives along with a base escutcheon. Bruce-Mitford considers the escutcheon to be unparalleled in some respects - showing a mixture of Celtic and Germanic techniques (enamelling with reserved designs on the one hand, and patterned stamped foil on the other) and suggests a date in the 7th century - perhaps around about 650 AD. {1}{2}{3} Kevin Leahy notes other finds of early Anglo-Saxon metalwork (see MLI51450) but it is unclear if they are from the same location. {4}
