Full Description

A probable Roman settlement site, located on the cliff to the south of Mill House. Much Romano-British material and metalwork has been found here, including a late Roman belt fitting. {1}{2} Part of a buckle of Hawkes and Dunning's type IIIA was found, consisting of a finely modelled animal's head with the buckle's hinge bar emerging from its gaping jaws. The hinge bar has an area of wear at the point where the tingue would have fitted. Kevin Leahy suggests that the site at Ingham is probably a rural settlement. Coins of the house of Valentinian found on the site show 4th century occupation. {3}{4} Romano-British pottery sherds were reported to have been ploughed up on this site before c.1970. {5} Cropmarks of small and regular rectangular ditched enclosures have been noted on an aerial photograph of 1979. The enclosoures were thought to have possibly formed part of a field system or small settlement. {6} A folis of Constantius II (c.320 AD) and a Flavian brooch were found on the site in 1989, along with lead fragments and building stone. {7} A geophysical resistivity survey by volunteers at Bishop Grosseteste University in 2021 recorded evidence for several linear features running parallel to historic field boundaries interpreted as the remains of a field system, a series of rectilinear enclosures possibly representing a building based on the quantity of Roman building material visible on the ground, and further rectlinear features in line with what is visible in aerial photography. {8}
