Type and Period (2)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
Part of a skeleton found by a dog beneath a garden wall at Spridlington House and reported in 1974. Associated with the skeleton was a carinated shield boss possibly of sixth century date, now in Lincoln Museum. {1}{3}
The skeleton was incomplete, the only bones present being the skull, right maxilla, mandible, four thoracic vertebrae, fourteen ribs, the right scapula and clavicle, ulna and ilium. The bones were broken and some erosion had taken place but otherwise they were in good condition. The remains were those of an adult, wear on the teeth suggesting an age of between 25 and 30 years. There was no clear indication as to whether the person was male or female. In those parts of the jaws available for study all the teeth were present at death, including the third molars, though four incisors and one pre-molar have since been lost. Dental health was good, there being no sign of caries or abscesses. There were three wormian bones in the lambdoid suture. {4}
