Full Description
A COMPLEX CROPMARK PHOTOGRAPHED IN 1960 BY J T HAYES. POSSIBLY AN ENCLOSURE OF THE ROMAN PERIOD. {1}{2}~ IN 1964 SEAMAN REPORTED THAT FIELDWALKING REVEALED SEVERAL SMALL SCATTERS OF BROKEN LIMESTONE BUT THAT NEITHER TILE NOR POTTERY WAS NOTED. THE FARMER HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY FINDS HAVING BEEN MADE AND THE SUGGESTED ROMAN DATING COULD NOT BE CONFIRMED. {3}~ APs BY TOM HAYES IN 1960 AND PAUL EVERSON IN 1977 AND 1979 SHOW A TRIPLE- DITCHED REGULAR RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURE ALIGNED EAST-WEST, WITH A WIDE DITCH FLANKED ON EITHER SIDE BY A NARROW DITCH - POSSIBLY CONTEMPORARY OR POSSIBLY RECUT IN SEPARATE PHASES. THE ENCLOSURE APPEARS TO HAVE AN ENTRANCE AT THE EAST END POSSIBLY APPROACHED FROM A NORTH-SOUTH TRACKWAY TO THE EAST. THE ENTRANCE APPEARS TO HAVE OTHER DITCHED SQUARE AND RECTANGULAR ENCLOSURES ON EITHER SIDE EXTERNAL TO THE MAIN ENCLOSURE - THOUGH THESE MAY BE ONLY ELEMENTS OF A WIDER OF A WIDER COMPLEX OF ENCLOSURES. THERE ARE TRACES OF INTERNAL FEATURES, POSSIBLY BUILDINGS, WITHIN THE MAIN ENCLOSURE - THESE ARE PARTICULARLY COMPLEX AT THE FAR WESTERN END OF THE ENCLOSURE AND POSSIBLY OF SEVERAL PHASES. POSSIBLY A ROMANO-BRITISH SMALL COURTYARD VILLA OR FARMSTEAD, OR A TEMPLE AND TEMPLE PRECINCT? {4}{5}{6}~
