Full Description

PRN 51378 DURING THE ROYAL COMMISSION'S SURVEY OF THE EARTHWORK REMAINS OF KNAITH, A SMALL QUANTITY OF MEDIEVAL POTTERY WAS OBSERVED IN THE GARDEN OF DUTCH COTTAGE. THE COTTAGE, WITH A FINE BRICK DUTCH GABLE AT ITS WEST END, APPEARS TO BE NO EARLIER THAN 1600, YET SEEMS TO BE PART OF THE LAYOUT OF THE SETTLEMENT EARTHWORKS ALONG THE EASTERN SIDE OF GAINSBOROUGH ROAD. (SEE PRN 50529.) {1} A PAVED STONE FLOOR OR YARD SURFACE IN THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF THE GARDEN OF DUTCH COTTAGE, AT A DEPTH OF c10' BELOW THE GROUND SURFACE, WAS SEEN BY STEVE CATNEY AND IAN GEORGE IN JUNE 1994: IN THE PROCESS OF EXCAVATION BY THE OWNER. {2} A watching brief in the garden of Dutch Cottage uncovered two undated building fragments, a north-south wall and a flagged floor. A quantity of unstratified architectural fragments were also recovered. It is possible that these elements represent a large building or range of buildings dating to the early 17th century and relating to Knaith Hall. No occupation debris was recovered. {3}{4}
