The settlement of Upton, though impossible to disentangle from Kexby at some periods in the documentary indicators of settlement size, appears always to habe been a medium-sized settlement; and with low reliefs in both the 14th and 15th centuries, seems to have been little affected by later medieval decline. The enclosure award of 1776 indicates a large block of ancient village enclosures extending from and including the hall in the south to Lodge Farm in the north, in a very rectangular configuration. Within this, the network of existing and former roads and lanes reflects and emphasises this regularity. The pattern suggests either planned elements within the morphology or perhaps an overall grid layout. Traces of earthworks, especially within closes around Lodge Farm, have been noted on aerial photography at SK 8707 8700 and SK 8685 8709. Some buildings mapped in the late 18th century and subsequently abandoned probably reflect a movement of farms and cottages onto the parish fields after enclosure (1776-8). {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}
