Full Description

The church was considerably rebuilt in 1867 and restored in 1880 although it retains Norman [1066 to 1200] features. A coffin stone is utilized as a tympanum over the church door. In 19 the church was in normal use. In 1964 Featherston reported that there was no coffin stone in the tympanum. {1} All Saints' Church has an 11th century chancel and the south side is entirely of Herringbone coursing. On the north side little of it is preserved. The nave’s south doorway is partly Norman and has a plain tympanum. The 13th century two bay north arcade has a circular pier, keeled responds, double chamfered arches and the moulded capitals have some nailhead. Within a double chamfered chancel arch the responds may have been cut away. The east wall has two lancets and a vesica window above it which was rebuilt in 1880, but the internal arches and sills look genuine. The west tower was rebuilt in 1776, and has a keyed-in circular west window and round-headed bell-openings. Ewan Christian renewed the chancel in 1867, and in 1874 to 1880 James Fowler carried out a major restoration. He rebuilt the south side of the nave, unblocked the north arcade and built the north aisle, Gothicized the west tower, and renewed the tracery in the south chancel windows. Of the 13th century sedile one simple, impressive stone arm remains. Of the font, only the base is original. {2} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
