Full Description
PRN 51364
All Saints' Church has a late Anglo Saxon west tower and south doorway (see PRN 51365), a 13th century chancel and north arcade and a Norman font [1066-1200]. It was restored in 1868 and is in normal use in 1964. {1}{2}
The porch entrance of the church seems to date from the 18th century. There is also a 13th century chancel and lancets, and a group of three stepped lancets under one arch. Inside is a double chamfered chancel arch on corbels, and a piscina with a pointed trefoiled head and concave jambs. There is a little nailhead decoration. Of the 13th century also, but earlier, is the north arcade, consisting of two bays, with octagonal piers, double chamfered arches, keeled responds and simple crocket leaf capitals. The font is Norman and plain and is of a drum or trough shape. The embattled foot is Perpendicular [1180 to c.1520]. {3}
During a watching brief, the foundations of the tower wall were revealed to a depth of 0.75 metres below the present ground surface. A plain chamfered plinth was observed at ground level, resting on an offsett rubble foundation. The buttresses at the north-west and south-west angles of the tower are additions. {5}{6}
