Full Description
The settlement of Little Corringham was formerly thought to be totally deserted and located in the south of the parish near Staplegate House. This information comes from C. W. Foster and T. Longley, 'The Lincolnshire Domesday and the Lindsey Survey' (1924). All maps before the first large-scale ordnance surveys sheets of the 1880s, including the first edition ordnance survey 1 inch sheet, identify it as the south part of the present village of Corringham: it had its own township area. No decisive fall in population is apparent and it certainly was never deserted. It lay principally along the east-west through main road, with some extension north before the late 18th century. The present principal north to south road, formerly ‘Townside Road’, lay along the edge of the settlement so that all properties on its east side have spread onto a former arable furlong. Parts of the common fields of Little Corringham were shared by the adjacent settlement of Springthorpe to the south. {3}
The parish was originally subdivided into Corringham Magna (Great Corringham) which included the church, and Corringham Parva (Little Corringham). These two divisions of the parish, maintained separately until the early 1800s, were clearly defined by a gate across Barony Street (now Middle Street). It was the result of an extensive lawsuit heard in the assize court in the early 1800s that deemed the two divisions of Corringham be united and one standard rate levied. {4}
