Full Description

THE SETTLEMENT OF AISBY LIES ALMOST ON THE NORTH PARISH BOUNDARY OF CORRINGHAM. THOUGH DOCUMENTED FROM 1086 ONWARDS, IT WAS NEVER A LARGE SETTLEMENT AND SHOWS NO DECISIVE DECLINE OR GROWTH. THE SETTLEMENT'S MORPHOLOGY IS UNUSUAL FOR IT COMPRISES A SMALL IRREGULAR LOOP BISECTED BY AN EAST-WEST STREET CONTINUING THE LINE OF THE FORMER AISBY GATE BETWEEN THE OPEN-FIELD FURLONGS. THIS LOOKS LIKE A TWO-PHASE DEVELOPMENT IN WHICH THE LOOP MAY HAVE BEEN SUPERIMPOSED ON A SIMPLER SINGLE-STREET PLAN, BUT EARTHWORKS DO NOT SURVIVE TO HELP ELUCIDATE THE PROBLEM. THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE LOOP HAS BEEN OBLITERATED AFTER THE NEW ENCLOSURE ROADS ALTERED ACCESS TO THE VILLAGE IN 1848-1852, BUT IS SHOWN ON ESTATE PLANS OF 1753. AISBY SHARED ITS FIELDS WITH GREAT CORRINGHAM IN THE POST MEDIEVAL PERIOD, THOUGH THIS WAS NOT ALWAYS SO. {1}~, HTM 19.5M
